Alternative Education Work Center (AEWC) is a high school program, managed by Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE) that provides an educational opportunity for at risk youths who have dropped out of school. The AEWC consultant provides students with counseling sessions, schedules and suggests independent study courses designed to meet high school diploma requirements.
New CASHEE (California High School Exit Exam) requirements -- Start now!!
All California high school students must pass the CASHEE in order to earn a high school diploma. This has important implications for all our students.
1) Most importantly, any student who expects to graduate by December 2006 should attempt the CASHEE on March 21 and 22. 22.
2) Students should begin CASHEE preparation RIGHT NOW!
3) Attend Mr. D's Math CASHEE prep workshops (see calendar).
4) Take the CASHEE Language Arts pretests on any Monday morning at 10:00 am in Ms. G's room.
5) If you believe you passed the CASHEE at a previous school, you must speak to Crystal about checking for the results. You will not be able to graduate unless passing scores are on file in the AEWC office.
Why do I have to take the CASHEE now If I'm not graduating until December 2006?
Here's the thing: unlike the GED, which you can take anytime and retake if you miss a section, the CASHEE is only offered twice a year. Additionally, it takes approximately 2 1/2 months or 10 weeks to receive the exam results. So if you take the CASHEE on March 21 and 22, we will not get the results until right before graduation mid-June. For most students, the CASHEE will not be offered again until November, and November results are not available until January. So the time to prepare for and pass the CASHEE is in March.
It is each individual student's responsibility to check your CASHEE status, complete your preparation, and attempt the test on March 21 and 22.
See Mr. D or Ms. G if you have any questions.

Dear Students:
What do you want to do after you graduate high school? This question is not always easy to answer and that’s okay. My name is Christine and I am here to help you answer this question and any other questions you may have about college, occupational training programs and career choices. It can be a difficult process if you do not know anything about it. At the same time, it is important to begin thinking about it and preparing for your future goals. There are many different career paths you can choose and many opportunities for you to look into. In order to discuss choices and opportunities, please feel free to set up an appointment with me to discuss anything that may be on your mind about college.
If you have absolutely no idea what you want to do, then that is okay too. You can talk about that as well and perhaps come up with a path that points you in the direction of where you want to go. Destinations where you may want to go include college, occupational training or just simply finding a job.
Located on the bulletin board across from Mr. D’s desk are some important dates to keep in mind. One in particular is March 2nd, which is the deadline for Cal Grant applications this year. You can get up to $8,300 to go to college just by living in L.A. You can’t get it if you don’t apply. College application deadlines and ACT/SAT test dates are also located here. In addition to dates, more information about college and job preparations can be found on the black display unit near Mr. D’s desk. Pamphlets are there for you to take and use as you need. These pamphlets include information on Student Loans, Grants, Scholarships, the College Application Process, and Occupational Training programs in the area. Many websites are referenced in the pamphlets. t is a good idea to explore these websites as they provide you with vital information on college and career choices.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Regards,
Christine Keller

What is AEWC and how does it work?
AEWC is an independent study program that provides students with an alternative way to earn a high school diploma. Students are assigned courses and coursework based on transcript evaluation and demonstrated competencies. Students are responsible for meeting with teachers and completing required course work. Students complete the majority of their coursework independently and have access to the AEWC study centers when they need assistance. Work is submitted to the teacher as scheduled. Students must make adequate academic progress to remain in the program.
Is AEWC right for me?
If your answers are "Yes" to ALL of these following 5 questions, AEWC may be right for you:
1) I am 16-18 years of age.
2) I can work independently on school work and complete a minimum of 20
hours of school work a week.
3) I can be responsible for attending meetings with my teacher and
turning my work in on time.
4) I can motivate myself to read and complete my work when other things compete for my attention.
5) I am committed to graduating.
How do I enroll?
Enrollment in the AEWC program is completed at individual study centers. Students interested in the program should contact the study center closest to them for specific details about testing and scheduled orientation. Enrollment is continuous throughout the year and dependent on available space. The program operates on a year round schedule. For more information, call the Gardena AEWC telephone number: (310) 366-7643.
